AT&T Acknowledges iPhone 18 Pro Max Issues: Update 'Immediately'

In a text message sent to customers today, AT&T acknowledged that some iPhone 18 Pro Max devices on its network are experiencing cellular issues.

AT&T said that customers should immediately update to iOS 27.0.1, despite the fact that many affected users have said that the update does not resolve the issues. There are now at least thousands of users that have experienced this problem, according to discussion topics across the Apple Support Community, Reddit, and MacRumors Forums.

Here is what the text message says:

Hi, it's AT&T. Action needed: An important Apple software update for your iPhone 18 Pro Max is available. Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately — Settings > General > Software Update. Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have questions.

Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 did not mention a fix for AT&T cellular issues. Rather, the update fixed a Face ID issue on the iPhone 18 Pro models.

As we reported last week, affected iPhone 18 Pro Max users are unable to connect to the AT&T network for phone calls, text messages, or data either persistently or intermittently, and their devices typically enter SOS mode as a result. The underlying cause has not been confirmed, and Apple has yet to publicly comment on the matter.

Notably, the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone unveiled last month that is equipped with a Qualcomm cellular modem. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all other countries. However, it is unclear if this is a contributing factor.

If a software issue is identified, then another update such as iOS 27.0.2 may be required. If there is a hardware issue, though, then this would obviously be a much bigger problem. We will provide further updates as new information becomes available.

Zero issues going on two weeks with the 18PM in the States with AT&T.In fact everything has been marginally or much better than the 17PM for me personally.

I'm still having Face ID issues in low light with my 18 PM on AT&T. No cellular issues- in fact, I have better reception and speeds than I did on my 16 PM, though I probably just jinxed myself. Oh well.
I'm seeing a lot of comments that face ID is simply slower and less responsive in general including intermittent low light issues. This doesn't bode well if its a hardware limitation due to putting the IR camera under the display just for a slightly smaller island. Curious how apple responds and deals with this issue and face ID problems.

This reminds me of when I went to the Apple Store to get my iPhone replaced after it was smashed to pieces by a crackhead on the train, and I was bruised and cut up from the whole experience. People were literally pulling their kids toward them when I walked past in the mall. The Genius I dealt with was very kind and took care of everything quickly and painlessly.

I just had to bring it to the Verizon store to get them to activate it. They acted like I was dumb for not getting it to work, and then they asked me for my phone number and they’d text me in like an hour and a half to 2 hours when they could get me in. I just blankly stared at them and repeated I didn’t have service, so I’d just wait there. Then I sat directly in the front of the store, crossed my arms, and looked angry. Within 10 minutes, all of a sudden they could help me, all the way in the back of the store, behind a giant column. Took them 2 hours to fix because turns out it wasn’t nearly as simple as they tried to tell me it was, because something was broken on their end.

All of that to say, the carriers suck and I wish they wouldn’t insist on SMS communications when the problem is their service.

I'm so happy I migrated my phone number to T-Mobile upon activating my new iPhone 18 Pro Max. AT&T is a trash. I just wish I switched to T-Mobile earlier.
